![]() It'll take literally a minute or two to kill the remaining sleeping larva after he kills just one. This alien good guy travelled all through space to do a half-assed job, did he? Well, that's what he's doing. The Ugly: -Several story problems-for one: There are several evil alien larva sitting unprotected which are just not killed-they're deliberately ignored or the search for them is just done immensely poorly. Mostly walking around talking like an idiot. The evil alien spends very little time doing anything. The legs barely move! -Insipid love story. We have a six-legged alien "thing" that we get to see moving around and what does it look like? A shaved, partially mutilated dead rat in rigor mortis. Sure, the alien is shown more, but for f*ck sakes! The special effects should have improved in quality! They still feel like they're mid-80's puppets, here. The Bad: -Very little chemistry between our heroes. Extensive yammering which attempts to explain every little detail about the aliens. Didn't Hurt It, Didn't Help: -The acting is nothing special, but it doesn't hurt the film too badly. Slightly better atmosphere than Hidden 1. Here's the breakdown: The Good: -Well, more shots of the alien and gore than the first film. Much like the heroes-who are completely forgettable while they forge an awkward love affair and make repeatedly poor decisions hunting the "evil" aliens. I say almost because the alien spends most of his time screwing around accomplishing nothing. Well, eventually, someone is infested again and the reign of violence almost starts again. This film follows a "chunk" of the original bad-ass alien as it infests a dog, then spawns several other tiny evil alien, um, larva. Satellite internet providers are HughesNet, Viasat, and Starlink.ISP Name Frontier Communications Max Average Speed 100 mbps ISP Country USA Think about it: all the information you send and receive has to go to space and back. Satellite internet is usually the slowest type of internet due to its high latency. Examples of some DSL internet companies are CenturyLink and Frontier. A few notable cable providers are Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox.ĭSL internet can handle top speeds around 100 Mbps, but it usually performs slower than that because the wires carrying your internet data are older and more prone to interference over long distances. It doesn’t have symmetric upload speeds, and cable connections can slow down when a lot of people in a neighborhood are on the same network at the same time. Examples of fiber internet providers are Google Fiber, Verizon Fios, and CenturyLink Fiber.Ĭable internet is also a fast connection type with top speeds up to 1,000 Mbps. Notably, fiber internet connections give you much faster upload speeds than other types of internet. Let’s go through the main types of internet and how they affect speeds:įiber internet is the fastest type of internet currently available. With a fiber internet connection, you would usually get equally fast upload and download speeds.ĭifferent types of internet connections can affect your speeds in a few different ways, mainly in speed or distance limitations, network congestion, or high latency. ![]() The exception to these asymmetrical speeds is usually fiber internet, which tends to be more generous with upload bandwidth than other types of internet. So if your internet plan says 100 Mbps, your upload speed would be 10 Mbps. Internet providers usually give you 10% of your download speed as your upload speed. That’s fine for most because you don’t normally send as much to the internet as you get from it.īut for people who upload a lot of files, photos, or YouTube videos for work-or households where there are multiple video calls going on at the same time-you’ll want to make sure your upload bandwidth can keep up. Many internet providers advertise download speeds but keep upload speeds a little more hidden because they can be much slower than download speeds. But upload speed-the speed at which you can send data to the internet-is also important. This helpful video from Xfinity can help you visualize the bandwidth requirements for different tasks like checking your email, streaming, and making video calls.įor most of this article, we’ve been talking about download speeds-the speeds that determine how fast you can receive data from the internet. In our opinion, it’s better to have a little extra bandwidth than to get stuck with a little less than you regularly need.Ĭheck every internet plan in your area to find the speeds you need. Giving yourself a bit of wiggle room isn’t going to hurt either. That’s 5–25 Mbps for streaming, 3–10 Mbps for Instagram, and 3–5 Mbps for web browsing. If you have multiple connections going at the same time, you also want to make sure you have enough bandwidth for every connection to run smoothly simultaneously-otherwise your network will slow down when multiple people get online.įor example, if you’d potentially have a smart TV streaming Netflix, a smartphone scrolling through Instagram, and a laptop looking up the best takeout in your area at the same time, 20–30 Mbps would work. Likewise, video streaming resolution affects how much internet speed you use-standard definition Netflix has a minimum requirement of only 3 Mbps, but streaming in 4K could easily use up 25 Mbps. Checking social media could mean a brief look on Twitter, or it could be endlessly scrolling through TikTok (which would use more bandwidth). The amount of bandwidth any online activity can use depends on a few factors. We recommend creating a new Firefox Account to use Firefox Sync and other services that require a Firefox Account. The dispute has evolved into a clash of tech titans, as First Look Media, a news organization founded by Silicon Valley billionaire Pierre Omidyar, has said it will support Gawker. Gawker and Thiel have a contentious history: The website outed him as gay in 2007. Thiel, the libertarian-leaning venture capitalist who co-founded PayPal and sits on the board of Facebook, made a financial contribution to the suit. Working with teenagers at RCPath outreach sessions has highlighted to me how important it is to start these informed conversations about health issues as early as possible. Healthcare is a huge issue in democracy and, as such, those of us who have some understanding can make a truly positive impact by sharing our knowledge in an accessible way with those who don’t. How much emotional anguish is expended on these false hopes? And how much money does it cost? The average person with a limited understanding of the biology of disease has little chance of making an informed decision on health issues.Ī basic democracy fundamentally relies upon the presence of a well-informed electorate (4). What’s more, many will not have a credible research base, some will quote incorrect statistics, and those that are factually correct are often misleading. The average person with a limited understanding of the biology of disease has little chance of making an informed decision on health issues.Īlthough anyone with a sick relative can easily find promises of a cure with a short online search, few of these are free. In the UK, the impossibility of delivering on the pledges made by successive governments has contributed to the devolution of healthcare decisions to local communities, and to a degree of so-called “postcode prescribing.” The public understands the effects – but not the cause – of the resulting differences in care provision. In the recent UK election, the National Health Service was a major talking point parties offered massive sums of money without precisely setting out the future benefits. Yet healthcare recipients have little opportunity to properly understand where the money goes. Northern European democracies spend about 10 percent of GDP on health in the US, that figure is over 17 percent (3). And it’s this key principle that I applied as lead teacher of pathology at the University of East Anglia and something I still apply to all medical outreach teaching.īut what is the point of all this effort? I believe that understanding pathology is central to the effective practice of medicine my educational paradigm is that we should concentrate on the delivery of understanding, not teach facts. The workshop was extremely popular and I became its lead presenter, delivering it alongside a number of other RCPath outreach sessions across universities, schools, science festivals, and other public events. Pathologists who volunteer to facilitate the discussions are encouraged to allow each student to develop their own ideas and understand the validity of those expressed by others. The two-hour “Your Body, Your Consent” workshop features a short lecture followed by group discussions (2). In 2011, the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) developed an outreach workshop to help students understand issues surrounding tissue retention. My educational paradigm is that we should concentrate on the delivery of understanding, not teach facts. The resulting Human Tissue Act of 2004 required each hospital to appoint an individual who was personally responsible for delivery of a lawful service, a role I acquired at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. All of them seemed to have the same attitude as some of the Alder Hey parents – if they had been asked, they would have donated some organs for research (1). I spoke to a number of people whose relatives had samples taken and retained at autopsy. ![]() I was as guilty as most in the “what they don’t know won’t hurt them” style of paternalism. Then came the Alder Hey organs scandal, in which patient tissues were retained without family consent. Working in a small town, I was often asked to speak about aspects of medicine and research to schools and local community groups. Then, while chairing the local Research Ethics Committee, I discovered just how difficult medical researchers found the process of explaining concepts they understood to the general public. When I started applying this as a consultant in the 1990s, I realized how much comfort it gave – and how little the living knew about disease, autopsies, and death. During my histopathology training, my mentor taught me that one had not finished an autopsy until the bereaved fully understood why the patient had died. |
